Experts in Spine Surgery

Detroit Receiving offers clinical expertise in many different spine procedures and surgeries, from initial diagnosis to treatment and recovery.  We understand that for many of our patients, spinal injuries or disorders can result in limited mobility and chronic pain. Our team works to treat debilitating conditions of the spine, to help our patients maximize their quality of life.

Our dedicated orthopaedic team has expertise in the following diagnoses

  • Adult deformity of the spine
  • Back pain
  • Cervical and lumbar degenerative disc disease
  • Disc herniation
  • Facet Disease
  • Kyphosis
  • Myelopathy of lumbar, cervical and thoracic spine
  • Neck pain
  • Osteoporotic fractures
  • Sciatica
  • Scoliosis
  • Spinal stenosis – cervical and lumbar
  • Spine fractures and Spinal cord injury
  • Spondylolisthesis – includes anterolisthesis and retrolisthesis
  • Tumors of the spine – cancerous and benign

Prior to recommendation of surgery, our team considers conservative, non-surgical or minimally invasive solutions.  We provide various outpatient procedures, as appropriate, including epidural injections, facet blocks, facet injections, discograms (diagnostic procedure to determine disc disease), and kyphoplasty surgery (very minimally invasive procedure to restore height and treat pain in fractured vertebral bodies).

If surgery offers the best opportunity for recovery, our experienced team can provide personalized and expert care.  As Michigan’s first Level I Trauma Center, Detroit Receiving Hospital features some of the most highly qualified surgeons in the nation, including Receiving’s chief of orthopaedics, Dr. Rahul Vaidya.  Dr. Vaidya has expertise in spine surgery and also has experience in spinal cord research.

Dr. Vaidya leads Detroit Receiving’s spine surgery program.  Supported by an experienced surgical team, he performs many surgical procedures after initial diagnosis, including:

  • Lumbar laminectomy/discectomy
  • Cervical fusion (anterior and posterior)
  • Lumbar fusion (posterior, and front/back surgery, also called a “360 degree” surgery)
  • Scoliosis surgery -  revision, as well as initial
  • Spine tumor surgery
  • Reconstructive surgery
  • Spinal stenosis surgery

In addition to surgery after initial diagnosis, Dr. Vaidya successfully performs “revision surgery” for cervical or lumbar fusion, as well as scoliosis.  Revision surgery is performed when previous a spine surgery was unsuccessful or is required again.
